You Told Me What Matters Most

Thank you to everyone who took a moment to tell me which issues matter most to you. Three topics rose to the top: border security and public safety, cost of living, and election laws and government accountability.

I appreciate hearing directly from you, and I want to follow up by sharing some of the work that has taken place at the Legislature on each of these priorities.

Border Security and Public Safety

Arizona’s border communities experience the consequences of drug trafficking, human smuggling and other border-related crime firsthand.

This year, the House advanced HB2416, which proposed $20 million for local border support through the Department of Public Safety, including funding for local law enforcement positions focused on drug interdiction, grants to communities for prosecution and detention costs, and related equipment.

I voted for the measure as it moved through the House.

Cost of Living

Affordability was another major concern readers identified.

One piece of legislation I personally sponsored this year was HB2792, which provides a full property-tax exemption on the primary residence of qualifying veterans with a 100 percent service-connected disability and provides for continuation of the exemption for qualifying surviving spouses who do not remarry.

The bill passed the House 57-0 and the Senate 29-1 before being signed into law on February 12. The law applies beginning with tax year 2026.

Election Laws and Government Accountability

Readers also told me they are paying close attention to how Arizona administers elections. Among the measures considered this year was HCR2001, which I voted for in the House.

The measure would require government-issued identification before voting, specify that elections are decided by eligible citizen voters, and provide voters an option for on-site ballot tabulation on Election Day.

Because it is a constitutional amendment, the Legislature does not make the final decision: after passing the House and Senate, it was transmitted to the Secretary of State to be submitted to Arizona voters at the general election.

Your responses help me understand which issues readers want to hear more about in these updates. I’ll continue sharing information about what is happening at the Capitol, how legislation moves through the process, and what those decisions could mean for Arizona.

Thank you for reading, participating in the polls and staying engaged.

Dear LD25 Friends, Last week, I wrote about housing affordability after our Legislative Town Hall at Arizona Western College. One of the points I made was simple: Arizona has a housing supply problem, and access to land is a big part of it. Now, new information from the Legislature's Joint Ad Hoc Committee on State Land Oversight shows why this conversation truly matters. BUCKLE UP! Arizona is currently short approximately 56,000 homes, while about 276,000 acres of potentially developable...

Dear LD25 Friends, This week, I had the opportunity to join fellow Yuma-area legislators at Arizona Western College's Legislative Town Hall for about 90 minutes of questions and conversation about the issues affecting our communities. It was incredible and I always look forward to these. We covered a lot of ground... water, housing affordability, education, workforce challenges, childcare, technology, state trust lands, and more. These conversations matter because good policy starts with...
